Free up Memory on G1 and MyTouch Android Devices

With devices like the G1 and MyTouch made by HTC, managing memory is extremely crucial to prevent data loss, freezing issues, and slowness. In some cases, users will experience issues with loading up the home screen if memory is not taken into consideration. This article will teach you how to manage memory on a regular basis to keep your phone in excellent working condition.

Clear browser cache, history, and cookies

1) From the home screen or application tray, tap on Browser.
2) Press the MENU button and select More.
3) Use the touch screen to select Settings.
4) Use the touch screen to navigate to 'Privacy Settings'.
5) Tap on Clear Cache, then Clear History, then Clear All Cookie Data, and finally Clear Form Data.

Remove unused and unwanted applications

1) From the home screen or application tray, tap on Market.
2) Press the MENU button and select Downloads.
3) Tap on the application you want to remove.
4) Tap Uninstall. Press 'Ok' at the prompt for removing the application.

Delete text message threads

1) From the home screen or application tray, tap on Messaging.
2) Perform a long press with your finger on a message thread.
3) A pop-up box will show on the screen. Choose Delete Thread.

Additional Tips and Tricks

  • Text message threads with over 100 messages will take up megabyte space. There are apps in the Android Marketplace you can download to back up text messages to a Gmail account if you want to store them permanently.
  • G1 and MyTouch devices need at least 20-25MB of free memory to function normally.
  • Media files will store to the memory card automatically.
  • Any apps that you paid for, but had to delete, will be available to you again for free in the market, given you are logged in under the same Gmail account you purchased it under.
